How to choose a Web DeveloperOver the last 12 years I've worked with a lot of Web Developers from all angles: as a client, a team member, and as a boss. I believe there are some core qualities to look for in a Web Developer and while many of them are common sense sometimes they are overlooked. This list can be used to assess your current developer or if you have a website project and are looking to hire a web developer then this list could be used as a quick assessment. For the sake of readability I will refer to the Web Developer as "Bob"CommunicationTalking with Bob should be a pain free experience. In order for your business vision to be successfully implemented on a technical level you must be able to easily communicate with Bob. Bob should be engaged in your conversations, be patient about explaining technical information, and not overuse "tech jargon." Bob should also ask you questions, expand your knowledge, and help you to fine tune your website goals. EstimatesDoes Bob tell you up front about how much a task or project costs? Does he put it in writing? Beyond providing a cost, an estimate should clearly define what tasks are going to be completed. If Bob is going to build you a custom designed WordPress website that includes a quote form, sells products, integrates with Google Analytics, and has a rotating slideshow then each line item should have a price next to it. Punctuality/TimelineDoes Bob call you back when he says he will? Web development is like any other professional industry in that organization and timelines are part of the job. Unfortunately time management is one of hardest things for web developers to get a hold of, especially early on in their careers. Be sure any estimates Bob gives you has a timeline on it, even if it's a simple one. ResponsivenessWhat happens when you call Bob or email him? Does it take a long time for Bob to respond to emails or phone calls? If Bob can't get to the meeting on time or return a phone call, what is going to happen if your website isn't functioning as it should? Is Bob invested in your success?Do you think Bob has your best interests in mind? Is he engaged in discussions about your business and goals? Does he protect you from making bad technical decisions? Bob is your connection to website expertise and if one of his top priorities for you as a client isn't your success, then look elsewhere. Is Bob a pro?It takes about 10 years to become a total pro in any field. If you were going to get cosmetic surgery would you want the doctor that has done 50 procedures or 5,000? With web development, a pro can do things several times better than a rookie. If your budget allows it, get an experienced web developer. LongevityIs Bob going anywhere? If you have long term goals with a website be sure that Bob isn't going on a 6 week mountain back climbing adventure right after your website will launch.
